Digital Vs Traditional Art: is one better than the other?

This article, written 3 years ago by Abby Schukei discusses the nature of both traditional and digital art in a school setting, questioning if one is better than the other. The article starts by explaining how students are learning skills for jobs that haven't yet been invented because of the innovations in technology that are seen in the near future. Digital art is one of the skills that hasn't full developed into a career, but with the help of NFT's and newfound technologies there is a change coming.

The article then begins with digital art, discussing the different benefits of teaching this curriculum. In comparison to the constant and pricey purchases of traditional tools, digital art can be accessed by one device. The article admits that the initially payment may not be cheap, but, in the long run you would be spending less on that than a year of art supplies. They also mention that one device seems to be more convenient than lugging around art supplies to and from class. Digital creations are also easier to access and share at any point in time. when it comes to mistakes made in art, when you are producing digitally there is normally a way to undo. Rather than in traditional where you would need to erase or even restart.

The article then transitions to the importance and benefits of traditional art making. Traditional art is a hands on experience which is important for experimenting with different materials and learning what they can do. They use the example of mixing colors and how physically doing it is a more educational experience. Traditional mediums also allow for the handmade nature of artwork that cant be reproduced visually. In relation to this, every artist has their own unique touch that is seen within their art. Sometimes physically being able to manipulate your materials shows that aspect more clearly. The last aspect of traditional art that they praise is its encouragement for problem solving. Unlike digital where usually you can just click a button to undo, a medium like drawing, painting, or sculpting required adjustment and sometimes more creative thinking if the mistake seems 'unfixable'.
