PROJECT 3: FALLING INTO THE ILLUSION

Updated: Dec 11, 2021

a collaborative piece

Repetition, Reflection, Consumption, all terms of which can be placed as descriptors of the media. By using a box like mirror structure and light projection my partner and I aimed to convey ideas held within the media. GIFs are another part of online culture that are literal representations of repetition. They hold societal meanings whether they be political or comical. We constructed a video of GIFs projecting onto what looks like an endless reflection. The bright colors, repetitive nature, the aimless scrolling and constant glare of the screen coming from multiple surfaces amplifies the overall nature of the media and the feeling it gives users. Both mesmerizing and ultimately consuming. The projection held within the box only reveals its recurring illusion when you interact with it, get up close and intimate with the surfaces. We are only ever consumed by the media when we interact with it, falling into its illusion.
